If That Old House on Rt 66 Could Talk!

Join us on Sunday, March 9th, from 2pm to 4pm, at the Hudson Area Library for an enlightening lecture with historian Fergus Bordewich, author of Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and The War for the Soul of America, and Ed Klingler, Restoration Carpenter and VHMH Site Manager.

Bordewich, who has termed the Underground Railroad as America’s First Civil Rights Movement, explains Quaker Charles Marriott’s role as an abolitionist in both New York City and Claverack and the role of his house on Route 66.

Ed Klingler takes us on a photographic tour of this historic Dutch house. View the house in its current condition. Even though historians recognize this house as being one of the oldest and most important examples of residential architecture in the Hudson Valley, decades of neglect have left the house a desolate ruin. Listen as Ed explains significant changes to the house over the years, puts to rest rumors of secret passages and unveils current plans for preservation.

This lecture is co-hosted by the African American Archive of Columbia County and the Hudson Area Library. Refreshments will follow the lecture. Copies of Bound for Canaan will be on sale. For information email: info@afamarchivecc.org. This event will also be recorded, and link to video will be provided a few days afterward.
